New Weight Loss Treatment Recommended by the FDA
At our weight loss clinic in St. Peters, MO, we offer Semaglutide, which is the new FDA-approved weight loss medication that behaves like a naturally occurring hormone in your body to reduce your appetite and curb cravings to aid in losing unwanted weight. Studies have shown that Semaglutide reduces appetite, improves self-control when eating, reduces food cravings, and improves glycemic control. In fact, studies show that Semaglutide is more than twice as effective than any other FDA-approved medication for weight loss. It’s believed the weight loss results with Semaglutide tend to last longer than results achieved by other methods. Semaglutide use showed higher body fat loss along with a greater reduction in waist measurement, belly fat, and BMI. The majority of Semaglutide patients experienced weight loss of at least 15% of their body weight, although many people lost more than 20%. This medication is gaining popularity with its impressive results.
Why Choose Semaglutide
Semaglutide Benefits
Semaglutide mimics an endogenous hormone in the human body called GLP-1. This hormone is integrally linked to the operation of the stomach, liver, and pancreas, as well as to the communication between the brain and digestive system. This medication causes a delay in gastric emptying, which makes you feel full longer. It also improves the utilization of blood glucose (sugar), which aids in burning carbohydrates for energy rather than storing them as fat, increases leptin sensitivity, which causes your body to preferentially burn body fat for a longer period of time, and changes natural brain chemistry, which directly reduces appetite. Semaglutide distinguishes itself by targeting fat loss through many distinct pathways while maintaining an established safety profile that sets it apart as the superior approach to safe and effective weight loss. The many benefits include:
- Decreases Appetite
- Decreases Body Fat
- Reduces Food Intake
- Increases Weight Loss
- Slows Food Digestion
- Enhances Pancreas B Cell Growth
- Lowers HbA1c
- Prevents Cognitive Decline
- Improves Cardiovascular Risk
Administration & Side Effects
Semaglutide is injected under the skin, once weekly at any time of day, with or without food, and should be injected on the same day each week. Semaglutide is generally well-tolerated. The most common side effects are GI symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, headache, fatigue, decreased appetite, and/or dizziness, most often due to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). These symptoms may occur when the dose is increased, but often improve or go away after a few days. Although Semaglutide by itself usually does not cause hypoglycemia, blood sugar can be affected by stress, illness, alcohol use, surgery, and skipping meals. Hypoglycemia can make you feel very hungry, dizzy, irritable, or shaky, along with a rapid heartbeat and/or tingling hands or feet. Semaglutide should not be used in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
How Semaglutide Works
Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. This peptide is an analog of a protein our body naturally produces to help prevent sugar spikes after meals by improving insulin production. Semaglutide is used to treat type 2 diabetes but has recently been approved by the FDA to help manage weight, along with diet and exercise, in overweight adults with other risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, etc. If your cravings are controlled and you feel fuller, you will be less likely to overeat, which will help you achieve and maintain a healthier weight. Life is all about balance, and that is especially true when it comes to diet. What we put in our bodies matters, but sometimes it feels like our hormones are working against us. With Semaglutide, your body will become more balanced and controlled and will also experience an improvement in efficiency with burning unwanted fat. Semaglutide is used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death in patients with type 2 diabetes, vascular disease, and/or heart disease.

History of Semaglutide
Semaglutide was originally developed to treat diabetes. It is a longer lasting derivative of earlier medications approved to treat diabetes and has a tremendous long-term safety profile. It first came to market, for diabetics, under the brand name Ozempic in 2017. Doctors noticed that the research participants in the Ozempic trials seemed to lose a significant amount of weight and had much less appetite as a symptom of the medication. Thus pharmaceutical companies decided to perform official weight loss studies with the compound under the trade name Wegovy™. Wegovy™ was FDA approved for weight loss and long term administration in December 2021. The incredible outcomes in the research trials along with the amazing results doctors were seeing with their patients led to a huge demand for Wegovy™. Unfortunately, due to this spike in demand, Wegovy™ has been very difficult to attain and when available has a large price tag that many can’t afford. To make matters worse, Wegovy™ is very rarely covered by insurance. Semaglutide, the active compound in the commercial drug Wegovy™, has recently become available as a generic drug to some providers but can still be pricey and difficult to obtain.
Fortunately, our medical providers at Morningstar Medical Weight Loss have been able to procure a top rated compounding pharmacy to supply us with this amazing medication at a fraction of the price.
